July 2016 Workshop Program with the Joy of Wood!

The public workshop program for July 2016 has been organised.

This includes these School Holiday workshops for kids aged 6 - 14:
  • Make a Kitchen Spatula
  • PalletCraft for Kids.
  • Make a Kitchen Chopping Board.
  • Make a Cajon Drum.
  • Make a Small Lidded Box with a Sliding Lid.
And offered for the first time:
  • Carve a Wooden Spoon (NOTE: for kids aged 8 - 14) 
Parents are always welcome to accompany their children to the workshops

For adults and young people aged 15 and over, we are offering:
  • Restore Old Tools     (a Tuesday evening)
  • Carve a Wooden Spoon from Green Wood     ( a full day Sunday)
  • PalletCraft - Recycling Pallets and Packing Crates        ( a Saturday afternoon).

Come and join in the creative fun with us at the Heritage Woodcraft Centre,
Unit 1 / 30 Canvale Road, Canning Vale, Western Australia.

Saw sharpening... a balance between rake, fleam, and set.

At the Perth Wood Show last weekend, I picked up a lovely Canadian-made Disston tenon saw from the second hand tool stand run by the Hand Tool Preservation Society of Western Australia. It's a beauty! However it just needed sharpening... Yep, a very nice Disston tenon saw, with the handle in very good condition. I have a few odd Disstons made in Canada. This is a new addition to my Canadian bunch.  With a three day gig this week at a primary school doing woodwork with the K - 2 students, I needed another sharp saw on hand. I also had another tenon saw needing sharpening for the event -an older Disston saw. So it seemed a golden opportunity to get them both done during a window of opportunity I had on the day before the school program commenced. The older Disston tenon saw, made in Philadelphia USA. "Woodworking for Life" - Hand Tool Woodworking as a Therapeutic Activity.

Creating things with our hands is good for the body, mind and soul. It's good for the brain too. In a former life, I was a Youth & Community Worker. So I love working with people, and have done a lot of work with those who are disadvantaged in some way. Amid the many people I work with today, teaching traditional woodworking hand skills and techniques, there are a number of people who have Acquired Brain Injuries - mostly as a result of road trauma. Car and motorcycle crashes. So we use woodworking as a therapeutic tool to help them rebuild their lives. Dean Kennedy of Francisco Films here in Perth, Western Australia, recently crafted this beautiful little 4 minute video about this aspect of my work. I invite you to view "Woodworking for Life" . A few Joinery Doors in Croatia.

A recent visit to Croatia was fascinating. Amongst the wonderful sights and smells of this ancient and very much alive land with its layers of history, my eye was of course often drawn to joinery and furniture. Not the modern stuff, but the older stuff which oozes history and story. Zagreb. So many amazing doors. Never mind the wheelie bin... The thing about these fantastic wooden doors is that they do not exist on their own. The context is important, and that context is usually the doorway, which is almost always made of carved stone, which was the building material of choice for centuries before concrete took over in the modern era. With so much marbleine limestone around the place throughout the country, it makes sense that so much of this stone was used. Being so hard, it also has weathered really well.
